Safe Antacids During Pregnancy
How Can I Get Rid of Heartburn While Pregnant
If your symptoms dont improve after making these changes, talk to your OB/GYN or midwife about taking an over-the-counter antacid like Tums or Alka-Seltzer. These antacids coat the lining of the esophagus and stomach, neutralize stomach acid, and are a quick and effective way to alleviate heartburn. For approximately 30 to 50% of women, antacids will do the trick. Antacids that are made up of aluminum, calcium, or magnesium hydroxides are considered safe during pregnancy. However, high doses of antacids, and those that contain magnesium trisilicates and bicarbonate have been associated with certain risks, so its important to speak with your provider before you take an antacid. Its unclear whether proton pump inhibitors such as Prilosec and Prevacid, and histamine-2 receptor antagonists such as Pepcid and Zantac, for acid reflux are safe during pregnancy. According to a January 2018 study in the journal Pediatrics, pregnant women who used PPIs and H2RAs were 45 percent more likely to have children with asthma than women who didnt use these medicines. Symptoms Of Indigestion And HeartburnSymptoms of indigestion and heartburn include:
Symptoms usually come on soon after eating or drinking, but there can sometimes be a delay between eating and developing indigestion. You can get symptoms at any point during your pregnancy, but they are more common from 27 weeks onwards. Raw Apple Cider VinegarMix 1 teaspoon of vinegar with approximately 8 ounces of water sip throughout the day and an hour before meals. It seems strange to think about drinking vinegar when your chest is burning, but low stomach acid actually creates heartburn. This works because it increases the acids, resulting in relief. Make sure the vinegar is raw, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar. Bonus points for an amber bottle. This happens when a small muscle, located where the food pipe meets the stomach, is weak or too relaxed. Its job is to let food into the stomach and to stop food and acids from coming back out, but if it is weak, the stomachs contents are able to flow upwards. It can leave you with pain or a burning feeling in your chest and/or throat. It can also cause a hoarse voice, sickness, bloating, an unpleasant taste in your mouth and bad breath not fun!

Why Do Period Poops Hurt
How your hormonal cycle affects IBS ð©¸ð©â¡ï¸?
There are several reasons why passing a bowel movement may hurt during your period. These include:
Digestive Issues Around OvulationAround ovulation, women are more likely to experience digestive complaints of bloating and constipation. These can be normal symptoms of eating food that didnt agree with you or not consuming enough fiber . But, if youre consistently bloated and constipated around ovulation each month, your hormones are likely to blame. Estrogen is the hormone primarily responsible for your extra bloat and backed up feeling during the few days surrounding ovulation. If you remember, estrogen levels peak right before you ovulate. These higher estrogen levels can result in a slower large intestine transit time and can make your body hold on to excess water. Both of which are key players in bloating and constipation. When your intestinal transit time is slowed, it takes the contents of your digestive tract longer to complete the journey out of your body. Couple that with estrogens affinity to keep our body holding onto water instead of releasing it into your gut, and you have a perfect storm for constipation. But dont worry, youre not destined for constipation in the middle of your cycle forever! There are some simple dietary and lifestyle adjustments you can make to keep your gut moving during this time of the month. Who hasnt noticed that at certain times of the month, the two seem to go hand in hand? Rest assured its normal, explains dietitian Sophie Medlin of City Dietitians. We know that the hormonal changes associated with the menstrual cycle impact gut function on many levels, includes how the bowel contracts, how fast food moves through the bowel, the amount of digestive enzymes that are secreted as well as how sensitive we are to stretches in the bowel wall, she says. However, if you also suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome , your monthly hormone fluctuations can make your already difficult gastrointestinal symptoms worse. Why would your body be so cruel and what can you do to soften the blow of this double whammy? We asked consultant gastroenterologist Simon Smale to explain. The Links Between Stress And Irritable Bowel SyndromeMany people with IBS experience a worsening of symptoms during times of psychological stress. Stress doesnt appear to directly cause symptoms, though. Instead, the Mayo Clinic notes, it may make them more severe or frequent. People with certain mental health issues or who have had traumatic experiences are also more likely to develop IBS, including the following:

Keep a food journal to track what you eat and drink and log any IBS symptoms you develop. This technique helps pinpoint foods or beverages that cause your attacks. An elimination diet might reveal a gluten sensitivity. If so, maintaining a gluten-free diet may improve your symptoms. This can prevent a woman from shedding her endometrial lining during her period. Because of this, the result can lead to cysts and/or inflammation. These types of tissue growths can also grow on the organs in the lower abdomen and interfere with bladder and bowel functions. Because endometriosis pains tend to intensify around a womans cycle, it tends to go undetected. Many women assume that the symptoms they experience are only related to menstruation. If the growths develop around the large intestine, this type of inflammation can contribute to bowel movements specifically and can cause confusion with a diagnosis of IBS. Common symptoms of endometriosis may include:
If you notice that your symptoms worsen around your period, its likely you dont have IBS, you have endometriosis. Natural causes of an absence of menstruation for three months include perimenopause, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. Certain lifestyle factors like stress and excessive exercise may also cause it. Furthermore, having either excessive or low body fat can also cause a missed period. Tumors on the pituitary gland or a hypoactive/hyperactive thyroid gland can also lead to hormonal imbalances and trigger secondary amenorrhea. Low levels of estrogen or high levels of testosterone can also result in a missed period. Genetic disorders such as Swyer syndrome and Turner syndrome result in a lack of menstruation without proper hormone replacement therapy. Some people experience a missed period because of medications such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, or chemotherapy drugs. You could also notice no period for three months or more if you have just stopped taking birth control pills. Physical issues like problems in your reproductive organs could also cause delayed or missed periods. Perhaps more difficult to clearly discern is the overlap between IBS and endometriosis . Several studies suggest that women with endometriosis have greater bowel symptoms compatible with a diagnosis of IBS. Such overlaps in gynecological and gastroenterological conditions are noteworthy and are important areas of further investigation. Based on the prevalence of these chronic painful conditions in women, the question arises as to whether there are gender-specific mechanisms underlying IBS. Laboratory and clinical studies support the hypothesis that increased pain sensitivity plays a role in functional bowel disorders such as IBS and non-ulcer dyspepsia, as well as in interstitial cystitis , dysmenorrhea, and ureter colic pain. Symptoms Related To Menstruation
What is IBS? (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
Many women experience variations in gastrointestinal symptoms including abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating, and constipation during their menstrual cycle. Abdominal pain and diarrhea tend to increase in the pre-menses phase of the cycle and reach a maximum on the first to second day of menstrual flow. Bloating and constipation, on the other hand, tend to increase post ovulation and stay increased until the day before or the first day of menstrual flow. Women with IBS have overall higher levels of symptoms regardless of cycle phase and also demonstrate these same menstrual cycle-related patterns. Women with IBS also report other more frequent and more bothersome symptoms such as fatigue, backache, and insomnia, and may have greater sensitivity to particular foods, such as those that are gas-producing, around the time of menstruation. For many women, the link between GI symptoms and their menstrual cycle may not be intuitive. The use of a daily diary in which both menstrual cycle days and symptoms are tracked often helps women see patterns in their symptoms. This may provide reassurance that symptoms are cyclical and help women plan strategies related to diet or medications. You May Like: Ibs And Lettuce Treating Menstrual Symptoms When You Have CrohnsThe gold-standard treatment for period cramps today are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs , like ibuprofen and naproxen . But people with IBD are told to avoid NSAIDs because this class of drugs is thought to precipitate or worsen a flare-up. Women are left with acetaminophen , but we know that acetaminophen is not effective, so a lot of women just suffer with the cramps, says Saha. I tell my patients that if their IBD is in control, its okay to use an NSAID sparingly when their symptoms are most severe, but they shouldnt if theyre experiencing a flare, she says. But check with your doctor before taking any over-the-counter medications. If GI symptoms are bad, and you know theyre definitely related to your period, its best to leave your maintenance medications as is and try to treat the symptoms. For abdominal cramping, you can use an antispasmodic, and for diarrhea or loose stool, you can try either fiber or the antidiarrheal loperamide . Some premenstrual and menstrual symptoms, though, can last as long as two weeks. For some women, going on contraceptive therapy like the birth control pill, an IUD, or the NuvaRing can be very helpful, says Saha. It can lessen the hormonal fluctuations, decrease GI symptoms, and reduce cramps. Symptoms Through The Menstrual CycleWhether or not you have IBS, researchers have found that the different phases of the menstrual cycle put people at risk for unwanted digestive symptoms. In the days of the month immediately following ovulation, all people are more likely to experience bloating and constipation. Things change as you get closer to and start menstruation. In the days just prior to menstruation and for the first day or two when bleeding starts, people are more likely to experience abdominal pain, diarrhea, and nausea. Also Check: Diarrhea Medicine For Pregnancy Defining And Diagnosing IbsThe definition of IBS has evolved over the past decade in order to incorporate new information about this complex disorder. The Rome III committee defines IBS as a chronic disorder characterized by abdominal pain or discomfort associated with disordered defecation . Symptom onset should be at least 6 months before the patient is first seen for formal evaluation. Abdominal pain or discomfort should be present at least 3 days per month for 3 months and should be associated with two or more of the following: improvement with defecation, onset associated with a change in stool frequency and onset associated with a change in stool form . The American College of Gastroenterology guidelines emphasize a clinically oriented approach and define IBS as lower abdominal pain or discomfort with disordered defecation . Why Heartburn And Gas May Occur At The Same TimeGas and heartburn are not always connected directly. However, it is possible for the two to exist together and make each other worse. It is also possible for a person to manage them in a similar way. One common cause of heartburn and gas is eating too much too quickly. Eating large amounts of food in one sitting can trigger heartburn, while eating quickly may cause a person to swallow more air, resulting in gas. Drinking fizzy alcoholic drinks, such as beer, can also cause both conditions to co-occur. Relieving gas through belching can cause heartburn to worsen. The release of air when someone passes gas either during or immediately after a meal can cause more acid to rise in the throat. If this occurs, a person may experience heartburn. People can treat heartburn directly with a couple of different types of medication that are available on prescription or over the counter . Medications for heartburn include:

OTC ranitidine is commonly used to relieve and prevent heartburn. Prescription strengths are also used to treat and prevent more serious ulcers in the stomach and intestines. Multiple companies sell generic versions of both the OTC and prescription products. So far, only Novartis/Sandoz and Apotex have recalled products. Ranitidine distributed by other companies remains on store shelves. Health Canada, a federal department within the Canadian government, has asked all companies to stop distributing ranitidine drugs there, indicating that “current evidence suggests that NDMA may be present in ranitidine, regardless of the manufacturer.” France has taken the step of recalling all ranitidine products. Fda Investigation Of NdmaSince mid-2019 there has been an investigation of a contaminant known as N-Nitrosodimethylamine found in ranitidine medications. NDMA is thought to be a human carcinogen something that could cause cancer. Very low levels of NDMA are commonly found in foods and in water. They can be eaten and tolerated in small amounts. At these low levels, NDMA is not thought to lead to an increased risk of cancer. But at higher levels of long-term exposure, it may increase the risk of cancer in humans.1 This impurity, present in some products, has been found to increase over time and when stored at higher than room temperatures. This could potentially cause consumer exposure to higher, unacceptable levels of NDMA.1-2 Recommended Reading: Can Birth Control Cause Acid Reflux How To Cope With Side Effects Of BuscopanWhat to do about:

ABSTRACT: Irritable bowel syndrome causes abdominal discomfort and pain and can worsen quality of life in children and adolescents. IBS is associated with changes in bowel function, resulting in diarrhea and/or constipation. Diagnosis involves assessing the patients history and clinical symptoms and applying the Rome III criteria. The main goals of managing IBS in children and adolescents are to improve abdominal function and reduce discomfort or pain, thereby enhancing quality of life. Pharmacologic management is beneficial as adjunctive short-term therapy, and nonpharmacologic management has been widely shown to produce the same or better outcomes in children and adolescents. Pharmacists can educate patients and their families, identify pediatric providers and community resources for IBS management, and ensure that patients avoid medications that can aggravate IBS. When Does Heartburn In Pregnancy StartHeartburn can and often does start during the first trimester, says Dr. Camille Thélin, MD, MS, a clinical assistant professor and Womens Digestive Health Program Director, Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition, University of South Floridas Morsani College of Medicine. Thats when those pregnancy hormones start surging through your body. They seem to decrease the pressure in the valve that separates the stomach from the esophagus. This valve is actually a muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter. Think of it like a door between the esophagus and the stomach, suggests Dr. Thélin. That acid is what causes the burning sensation and possibly a sour taste in the back of your mouth. However, if youre one of the lucky ones who make it through the first trimester heartburn-free, dont get too comfortable just yet: Heartburn can also develop during second or third trimester, too.
